Vacancy: Finance Director, Africa

Passionate about developing and implementing solutions for hidden hunger, the Micronutrient Initiative (MI) works in partnership with governments, the private sector and civil society organizations to address micronutrient deficiency and related health and nutrition problems in underserved populations.
 
Governed by an international Board of Directors, MI works in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America and reaches 500 million people in 70 countries.
 

With headquarters in Ottawa, Canada MI maintains regional offices in New Delhi, India and soon Nairobi, Kenya that manage our country offices in Asia and Africa.
As we begin staffing our Africa Regional Office in Nairobi Kenya we are seeking skilled and highly motivated individuals to fill key positions in the areas of Finance, Nutrition, Monitoring and Reporting, Contracting and Procurement, Human Resources and support staff.
 
We are recruiting for the following position:

1. Identification
 
Position Title: Finance Director, Africa

Reports to / Position Title: Regional Director, Africa
 
Indirectly Reports to / Position Title: Finance Director, Corporate Accounting, MI Ottawa
 
Location: Nairobi, Kenya

2. Overall Purpose / Broad Function: The overall purpose of the position is to lead the finance and administration function including accounting, administration, budgeting, reporting and IT requirements for the Africa region in close coordination with the Finance and Administration Unit at HQ.
 
 
3. Key Duties and Responsibilities:
 
Africa Management Committee
  • To participate as a member of the Africa Management Committee in the overall planning, management, program and financial decision making of the MI in Africa.
  • To participate in various meetings such as the Regional planning meeting as required.
Financial Management
  • Ensure the production of accurate and timely financial information for the region, including reviewing and approving financial transactions, journal entries, account reconciliations, financial analysis, financial reports etc.
  • Provide effective support to staff throughout the region in understanding and implementing MI financial and administrative policies and procedures, including effective and regular use of the contracts database
  • Ensure that financial policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Prepare, manage and review program and operational budgets.
  • Assist program staff in developing and management of grant and proposal budgets.
  • Provide oversight on Contracts Database (CDB) project input, documentation requirements and maintenance.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory obligations for all offices in the region.
  • Effective management of banking arrangements and cash flow for all offices in the region.
  • In liaison with Payroll service providers and other third party agencies in the region, effective management of staff salaries, including calculations and timely payment, in line with national labour law, tax and social payments.
3. Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure effective administration of regional and country offices, including facilities management, material management, leasing, office maintenance, records management, security, etc.
  • Internal and project audits under the direction of HQ as part of MI’s risk management strategy
  • Coordinate statutory audits for the region
  • Management of information technology for the region
Budgets and Donor Proposals
  • Coordinate and consolidate annual program and operational budgets for countries and the region
  • Coordinate and prepare monthly/quarterly variance analysis, financial reports, and budget updates
  • Coordinate and prepare budgets for donor proposals for submission and approval from HQ
  • Coordinate and prepare donor reports as required for submission and approval from HQ
Management
  • Coach accounting employees in financial areas and financial systems
  • Coach and provide guidance to non-accounting employees
Other duties and responsibilities as required.
 
4. Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Three direct reports
  • Six indirect reports
5. Education / Professional Designations / Experience:
  • Masters in Commerce with at least At least 10 years accounting experience and a minimum of 5 years in a senior financial management position in the development sector
  • Professional accounting designation (i.e. Chartered Accountant)
  • Experience working with foreign currencies and foreign accounting practices
  • Solid knowledge of generally acceptable accounting practices, financial systems, budget and cash flow monitoring and accounting controls, in an international context
  • Experience in budgeting and budget management as well as donor reporting
6. Language Skills
  • Fluent in English. Knowledge of other languages spoken in countries supported by MI is an asset.
7. Travel Requirements:
  • International travel may be required on a limited basis.
8. Other Specific Skill Requirements:
  • Ability to control and manage financial policy and procedures and good practices/systems
  • Solid knowledge of accounting software, MS Dynamics GP (Great Plains) an asset
  • Solid knowledge of MS Office
  • Solid knowledge of IT systems
  • Knowledge of data bases
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and cultural sensitivity
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams as well as work as a member of a team
  • Capacity to coach employees
  • Sound management skills, both financial and human resources
  • Solid planning and organizational abilities
  • Problem solving
  • Ability to work under pressure
