Governed by an international Board of Directors, MI works in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America and reaches 500 million people in 70 countries.

 
With headquarters in Ottawa, Canada MI maintains regional offices in New Delhi, India and soon Nairobi, Kenya that manage our country offices in Asia and Africa.

As we begin staffing our Africa Regional Office in Nairobi Kenya we are seeking skilled and highly motivated individuals to fill key positions in the areas of Finance, Nutrition, Monitoring and Reporting, Contracting and Procurement, Human Resources and support staff.

We are recruiting for the following position:

2. Overall Purpose / Broad Function:
 
Working as part of MI’s Technical Team, and based in the Africa Regional Office in Kenya, the position advises MI staff, MI external partners and consultants in Africa on appropriate strategies for positive behavior change relating to MI’s programs, based on responsiveness, recommended practices, theory and innovation.
 
The position will help MI staff and stakeholders identify opportunities to improve enabling environments and encourage care-givers to more effectively seek and use health services and have providers more effectively offer micronutrient interventions, thereby increasing the overall effectiveness and impact of MI interventions in Africa.
 
3. Key Duties and Responsibilities:
 
3.1 Program Development
  • Support the development of MI Project Concept Notes to ensure that appropriate Behaviour Change Intervention strategies are included at individual, provider, community and policy levels in programs seeking to improve end user uptake, acceptability and utilization, especially, though not confined to, micronutrient interventions during pregnancy, the use of zinc and ORS in diarrhea treatment, and infant and young child feeding.
  • Develop, or provide inputs to, MI project performance measurement (monitoring, and as needed, evaluation) frameworks.
  • Propose/develop operations or evaluation research when a need is identified, to investigate persistent constraints to positive behavior change to better inform program design, and to identify innovative and effective approaches to behaviour change which could be scaled up.
  • Pro-actively propose Behaviour Change strategies, tools, guidelines and resource materials to support MI staff and partners to improve the effectiveness of MI programs.
3.2 Program Implementation and Management
  • Provide technical advice and support to development of behaviour change interventions, including communications campaigns, training approaches, curricula and counseling materials to MI program staff and stakeholders, and capacity building, where appropriate.
  • Provide technical guidance to MI staff and partners in developing behavior change strategies and interventions (including training programs which are intended to change behaviors), multi-channel communication strategies and tools and training materials as required.
  • With respect to improved approaches to behaviour change which should be scaled up, support the development and implementation of a capacity-building strategy for MI staff, stakeholders, organizations and government counterparts in Africa.
3.3 External Relations
  • Maintain up to date professional knowledge, and develop networking and synergies to facilitate and reinforce sharing of best practice with other relevant programs, experts and organizations in Africa.
  • Promote the value and use of effective Behaviour Change Intervention strategies to stakeholders and government counterparts.
  • As needed, represent MI on national technical working groups and in other national and regional fora.
  • Support MI resource mobilization initiatives as required e.g. writing behavior change components for external funding proposals.
3.4 Program Monitoring (in liaison with the Regional Monitoring and Reporting Manager)
  • Design and conduct qualitative research and quantitative baseline and end line data collection exercises to assess barriers and enablers affecting the demand for, acceptability and utilization of key micronutrient interventions as well as the effectiveness of strategies adopted to address them.
  • Monitor the quality of behavior change activities conducted, through consultation with consultants, partners, trainers and community educators involved in work supported by MI, to ensure appropriateness.
3.5 Program Evaluation (in liaison with the Regional Research and Evaluation Adviser)
  • Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of behavior change interventions, tools and materials in use by stakeholders or those developed by MI with regard to their value in improving take-up and use of micronutrient interventions.
Other duties and responsibilities may be required.
 
4. Supervisory Responsibilities:
 
Position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may supervise consultants hired by MI to support its projects; it has the shared responsibility to supervise one program assistant.
 
5. Education / Professional Designations / Experience:
  • Master’s degree essential in any of the following disciplines: public health, nutrition, social sector program policy and planning, medical/applied anthropology or similar relevant discipline; with a focus on program communications, social marketing or similar strategies for behavior change.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the behavior change field in the health sector, with a strong preference for substantial experience in Sub-Sahara Africa and understanding of nutrition.
  • Solid knowledge of community development and behavioral theories that underpin effective approaches in developing effective behavior change strategies.
  • Expertise and experience in designing and conducting qualitative research.
  • Excellent knowledge of IT tools.
6. Language Skills:
  • Fluent English essential, fluent French desirable.
7. Travel Requirements:
  • Based in Nairobi, Kenya; travel may be required up to 30% of the time.
