Living Goods Communications Intern Vacancy in Kenya

May 31, 2017

Living Goods

Communications Intern (Kenya)

The Opportunity:
We’re looking for our first editorial intern to help tell our story to a range of audiences including funders, government partners, NGOs, and supporters.

Living Goods Community Health Volunteers are saving and improving lives by supporting pregnant mothers and babies, educating families about proper health care, and diagnosing and treating children for preventable illnesses like malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea.

Extraordinary things happen every day at Living Goods.

We want to share these stories with audiences across the globe to build support for Living Goods and community health at large.

Working with the Director of Communications and country staff, you will identify, collect, and synthesize compelling stories that demonstrate the impact Living Goods is making in Kenya.

You will work closely with branch staff, Community Health Volunteers, and clients to capture stories that will move our audiences to action—whether it’s interviewing a proud Community Health Volunteer at a branch graduation, or talking to a mother whose child’s life was saved after contracting malaria.

This is a hands-on opportunity and much of your time will be spent immersing yourself with our work in the field.

We are looking for a part-time (10 -20 hours/week) commitment for three months.

Intern will be paid a small salary and provided with a food per diem and transport costs when traveling in the field.

There may be an opportunity to continue the internship beyond three months if there is a good fit.

This is an exciting opportunity to use your storytelling and writing skills for a good cause!

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Community Health Volunteers and branch staff to identify compelling stories and testimonials.
  • Interview Community Health Volunteers and clients and craft stories that demonstrate the health impact Living Goods is making in the community.
  • Work with the US-based Director of Communications to identify and address content needs.
  • Spend about 70 percent of your time in the field collecting stories, and 30 percent of your time in the headquarter office crafting content.
  • Draft content for blog posts, emails, stakeholder reports, social media content, and more in collaboration with the Director of Communications.
  • Adhere to the use of interviewee consent forms when collecting stories.
  • Occasionally accompany a professional photographer to collect both written stories and images.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Journalism, editorial writing, or storytelling experience required.
  • Proven ability to craft effective content that captures the hearts and minds of readers.
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly with minimal oversight.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work in many different contexts—one day you may be in the office, another day you could be sitting in a client’s home.
  • Exceptional professionalism and maturity, especially when talking to clients and Community Health Volunteers about sensitive issues.
  • A ‘can-do’ attitude and openness to a more fluid schedule.
  • Ability and wiliness to travel.
  • Photography and photo editing skills a BIG plus.
