Commercial Bank Head of Operations Job in Kenya

An Exciting Career Opportunity
A well-established commercial bank with a robust growth strategy, is looking for a dynamic and proactive Kenyan professional with strong credentials and relevant work experience to fill the position below to be stationed at its Head Office.

Head of Operations
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the incumbent will be responsible to provide leadership to and oversee the central operations team comprising the Treasury Back Office, Central Clearing department, Alternate Channels and the Customer Experience and Contact Centre as well as ensure that the Branches of the Bank are operationally efficient. 

The incumbent will also be responsible to coordinate the business and user support departments.

Main Duties:
  • Leading the development and implementation of the overall strategy for Operations Department
  • Ensure proper and efficient functioning of central operations departments
  • Ensure superior service levels across all customers touch points
  • Cost Management – This position is responsible for contributing to profitability directly by ensuring prudent cost management and waste reduction across the entire organization
  • Continuous Process Improvements and process efficiencies in the entire organization – Responsible for the delivery of day to day support of all banking operational functions and work with other stakeholders to provide the technology solutions, process improvement efforts to promote efficiency and standardization across the organization
  • Lead centralization and standardization of operational processes across the bank and in conjunction with other areas of the organization
  • Ensure organizational operations quality through review, update, implementation and adherence to agreed internal policies, procedures and manuals
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory provisions and requirements
  • Maintain a professional work environment that focuses on superior performance by departmental staff – Establish effective systems, procedures and standards of performance for staff in the Operations Department, and in conjunction with Head of Branches for those operations staff in the branches
  • Training and motivation of staff – Identify training and counseling needs and ensure these are met for all staff under review as appropriate
  • Play a lead role in developing alternate channels of customer service delivery, such as agency banking and third party partnerships and offer enhanced convenience to customers
  • Monitor agency arrangements, reconciliations and settlement of claims and commissions relating to all channels.
  • Provide the necessary support as appropriate in execution of the organization’s expansionist strategies such as branch expansion, rollout of agency banking and rolling out of strategic partnerships
  • Working closely with the relevant Head Office departments, ensure effective administrative support to all the branches including resolving premises and other business-as-usual operational and service issues arising from time to time
  • Responsible for the overall budgeting and planning for the daily Operation Department functions
  • Talent spotting to ensure appropriate exposure and career opportunities / succession planning for high performing staff in the Operations Department and branches network
  • Manage and mitigate operational risk
  • Facilitate obtaining and renewing service contracts for the Bank
  • Handle and coordinate procurement of assets and services for the Bank
  • Facilitate obtaining and renewal of Bank and Branch Licenses from various regulatory authorities and Bank insurance policies
  • Compile and submit requisite CBK reports
Minimum qualification and experience required:
  • Bachelors degree in Banking, Finance or Accounting. MBA will be preferred
  • 10 years’ experience in bank operations, 5 of which at a managerial level.
  • Working knowledge of core banking and clearing systems preferably T24 and Sybrin.
  • Knowledge of relevant products and services.
  • Knowledge and effective application of all relevant banking policies, processes, procedures, guidelines, including Automated Clearing House (ACH) rules and guidelines and  to consistently achieve required compliance standards or benchmarks.
  • Good interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with and manage customer expectations (internal and external), and other stakeholders who impact performance.
  • Excellent leadership capacity including possession of strategic development, monitoring, execution and reporting skills (have a strategic outlook)
  • Experience with cultivating business relationships and managing multiple priorities as a manager or unit head
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and of impeccable integrity
