Dairy Value Chain Study and Market Mapping Study for the Kenya Market - Led Dairy Value Chain Supply Project
1.0 Background: The Kenya Market-Led Dairy Value Chain Supply project is a four-year project, funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).

The project targets to reach 30,000 smallholder farmers in 6 counties namely; Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Trans Nzoia and Elgeyo Marakwet counties in the North Rift Region of Kenya and Embu and Tharaka Nithi counties in Eastern Kenya.

The project’s overall goal is to ‘improve the livelihoods of 30,000 small holder dairy farmers and their families, through increased dairy productivity, increased incomes and increased participation of women and youth in the dairy value chain”. Other beneficiaries include dairy value chain service providers and local governments.

This Project is developed and based on the need for the Kenyan dairy industry partner (NKCC) to collect more locally produced milk and to improve the quality of collected milk to satisfy the Kenyan market’s need for high quality processed and packaged dairy products.
This project has been developed jointly by the project partners Heifer Project International (Heifer), New KCC (NKCC), Tetra Laval Food for Development Office (FfDO) and Tetra Pak Kenya (Tetra Pak). Heifer will be the implementing partner in this project and will coordinate all activities.

The background to this market-led dairy supply chain project is the need to utilize the great potential of small holder milk production in Kenya to meet the growing demand for milk and dairy products by the dairy industry and consumers.

The project will focus on 30,000 smallholder farmers, 20,000 in the Rift Valley (Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet & Trans-Nzoia counties) and 10,000 in Embu and Tharaka Nithi counties in Eastern Kenya to improve smallholder farmers’ linkages to a market-led dairy value chain.

The Project will work primarily through dairy Producer Organizations (POs) or dairy societies (23 in North Rift Region and 5 in Eastern Region) in the above areas to reach the main beneficiaries who are the farmer members of these organizations.

The POs operate as dairy cooperatives engaged in milk production, collection, bulking, chilling and selling, and in some cases processing milk into yoghurt and other dairy products.

The Project will work to build strong POs by strengthening governance, leadership and business structures as well as developing social capital, savings groups and promoting gender equality.

This approach will ensure farmers’ resilience and sustainability far beyond the Project intervention period.
